Brilliant Holmes!
The title of this post comes from me and Widdershins‘ interpretation of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, or the alternate title Midnight Theatre. The latter name comes from the fact that when we did this, it was around midnight. This all happened live in a chat session on a public channel. To see the entire thing, go to this forum post.
If you went to the forum post link, you will notice that the Ckushhhia “clan”, if it can be called that, has it’s own forum now! Brought to you by InvisionFree. Please feel free to stop by and say “Hi” or whatnot. My goal/dream is to evolve the forum into a active clan activities/mod development board. To be quite honest, me and the guys want to get into mod development, but we don’t have very much motivation at the moment. That is, however, the reason why I’m going to school.
Currently I am working towards the Computer Game Development Certificate at Edmonds Community College. I gotta say, I like the courses that EdCC offers. I have a couple complaints from this quarter, one regarding the incompetence of the Financial Aid department and another with my 3D Graphics Animation class. Aside from those two things, I’m really enjoying my stay there. My favorite class by far is my programming class, even if it is in crappy Visual Basic .NET. It’s a bad language, but I won’t get into it. To be honest, after I get the Computer Game Development Certificate, I’m highly considering going back to get the Linux Security Specialist Certificate, Unix/C++ Specialist Certificate, and the Windows/C++ Certificate. After I get the Computer Game Development Certificate, I will have about 90% of the courses required for the Windows/C++ Certificate finished and 50% of the Unix/C++ Specialist Certificate finished. Plus, if I get my certificates in the order of Windows, Unix, Linux I will have roughly 60% of the requirements for the Linux Security Specialist Certificate finished when I start. However, I can only do this if I get a decent job after I get the Computer Game Development Certificate. I’m hoping that once I learn some skills from school and get a decent job, I’ll stop being lazy and actually get some good programming done. Someday I do hope to move on to DigiPen. We’ll see what happens down the road. I think I’d take the 5 year route if I went to DigiPen. I’ll need to be able to keep a job whilst going to school.
Some real world news! :O I actually cleaned out and vacuumed my room! Holy crap Batman! Alert the media! As you can guess, I don’t clean my room very often. Let’s just say the corner had a dust bunny village and I murdered every last one of them. Now I can play console games without having to use my monitor, thus allowing me to multi-task while playing console games! I would have to say, the loss of multi-tasking is probably the main reason why I have so many unfinished console games.
Yesterday, my dad handed me an un-opened box of Redhat Linux version 5.2. Why he decided to purchase Redhat is beyond me. He probably did it because it was a bargain. And now, for who knows how many years, we have had a perfectly good copy of Redhat lying around doing nothing. The thing even came with four books just on how to use Linux. My dad is funny in a way that he wants to learn new things, but never has time or is too tired to learn them. By tired I mean that he was working all day (not necessarily the money making kind) and all he really wants to do is sit back and relax.
Speaking of Linux and computers, I just spent the majority of my afternoon updating my desktop and server operating systems and server binary packages. I know have two up-to-date 64-bit Ubuntu installations and a server with a buttload of video game dedicated server packages installed on it. I can host one 20 slot server with my internet connection (2mbps upload). Anything above 20 seems to cause major lag spikes. I would like to have my server running 24/7, but I’m trying to conserve as much of everything as possible, since my parents are in a lot of debt and I’d feel guilty of wasting their money by leaving a server that nobody plays on all the time. Currently we have the “clan” members that use Ventrilo everyday, but that hardly is an excuse for running a completely seperate computer, let alone leaving even one computer on 24/7.
Just a random thing thrown in here, hopefully I’ll be getting a job soon. Keep my fingers crossed though. The company down the street, is hiring. Last time they were hiring they were looking for computer maintenance workers, which I could totally do, but the me from 1-2 years ago was a lazy sucker. I’m really regretting not pouncing on it the first time. I don’t know what they’re hiring for, since it’s Sunday and Monday’s a holiday, so they’ll be closed. I’m gonna go down on Tuesday and see what they’re hiring for. Hopefully it will be a good job that I can nab.
Let’s see, in gaming news, I beat Infernal. Mediocre action game. The reason I bought it was because it was on sale for $10. In anime news, I’ve started watching Saikano and Ookiku Furikabutte again. I had started both, but never finished. I’m about halfway done Ookiku and three episodes into Saikano. Ookiku is a pretty good baseball anime and Saikano … well, Saikano is … interesting. I’d definitely say Ookiku is the better of the two. Sadly, Saizen Fansubs has only subbed the first 13 episodes of Ookiku, I’ve had to get the other 12 episodes from Central Anime. I will still wait for Saizen’s subs to come out, but I couldn’t wait to watch more.
To finish off for today, please note that I have added a Review page to the blog. Please check it out as I will try and frequently review mods and games that I play. And please, leave a comment on any of my posts. I would like to know what people are thinking. I do ask that it be constructive criticism if you do criticize.
Until next time, “Firing owl burner! Brace yourself Holmes!”

Well done, my dear Watson!
Brilliant, sir!
I amazed with how much information you’re able to convey in a single blog entry. Excellent work!
At some point we both need to be in the same place at the same time on a Sunday. I’ll blame myself for that. Perhaps I’ll be able to drag you down to SaturdayHouse at some point, too, although I won’t be able to make it there the next couple weeks myself because I’ll be traveling (vacation ftw).
Go for it on the certificates. If you get those you’ll be further ahead of the game than I am as far as getting programming/IT jobs. Degrees are great, but if you’re applying for jobs with competent companies they’ll be basing the decision off of how much you know and can do rather than what a four-year institution decided to label you.
Yes, we should chill sometime. I do believe I still owe you a movie for losing that bet.
